Battered by an improvised explosive device explosion, their injuries were severe. Within an hour, the blood laboratory's supply was exhausted.
The Highlands Chapter of the Red Cross, based in Fayetteville, N.C., served meals to Airmen and Soldiers departing from Pope AFB for Haiti. On the night of Jan. 22, 2010, under the dimly-lit lights from the C-130 cargo bay, aircrews from Dyess and Pope Air Force Bases, worked with soldiers from Fort Bragg to load two C-130 Hercules aircraft with supplies for U.S. Army soldiers already deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
After the cargo was loaded onto the aircraft, the crews then rigged the parachutes to the static lines to ensure the parachutes would deploy as the cargo was dropped from the aircraft.

As the troops moved through the serving line offers of more potatoes, getting enough ham, how about some more turkey could be heard by these hardy servers. Dressed in his best serving apparel, Lt.
Legal readiness is a critical aspect of your operational readiness. Legal readiness is defined as "the degree to which Air Force members are ready to deploy in both personal and mission capacities." On a personal level, this involves awareness of personal legal issues that may arise during a deployment and the remedies available to mitigate any adverse effects of those issues. Regarding the mission, legal readiness involves the ability of individuals and their organizations to deal with the military-legal aspects of the operational environment, including the law of armed conflict, rules of engagement and status of forces agreements. This article is the first in a series designed to provide information on these issues.

The formation of the Corps consisted of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Brigades. Exactly 65 years later, the XVIII Airborne Corps and what is now the 440th Airlift Wing came together on August 25, 2009 at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., to honor the birth date of the XVIII Corps and the lasting relationship they have with the 440th Airlift Wing that began in 1944. Steven Rosenmeier. The 440th's first Mission Support Group commander at Pope Air Force Base said farewell to the wing on the July UTA before heading to a new assignment in Air Force Reserve Plans and Integration at Robins Air Force Base, Ga.

"The last two years have been mind-boggling," said Rosenmeier as he reminisced about his service at Pope. "We grew from 10 Airmen to more than a thousand in just six months. We went from one facility on the 2nd floor of building 399 to more than 40 facilities occupied by our Airmen. It's been an amazing journey."

Joel Givens carries a weapon with him everywhere - everywhere that is, except for at Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

"This is one of the safest places I go," Sergeant Givens said. "It's probably the only location where I go that I don't bring my firearm."

Though he spent eight and a half years in Security Forces while on active duty, Sergeant Givens' current job as the Military Equal Opportunity officer for the wing since 2007 certainly does not require him to be armed. When he's not in his Air Force ABUs, Sergeant Givens wears the uniform of the Rockford, Ill., police department, where he's been an officer for the past 10 years.

The 440th Airlift Wing will dedicate a unique nose art designed to commemorate the close association between the 440th Airlift Wing based at Pope AFB and XVIII Airborne Corps located at Fort Bragg.

The nose art dedication will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the XVIII Airborne Corps and the historic relationship with the 440th AW that began during World War II. In September 1944 the 440 Airlift Wing, then know as the 440th Troop Carrier Group, dropped from the paratroopers of the XVIII Corps into Holland during Operation Market Garden. The 440 AW and XVIII Corps also took part in Operation Varsity an airborne crossing of the Rhine River that was the largest airborne assault of World War II. On August 25, 2009, the 440th Airlift Wing will unveil the unique nose art, and henceforth the Hercules C-130 H2 aircraft, tail # 60418 will be associated with the XVIII Airborne Corps, "The Sky Dragons" - "America's Contingency Corps."

Fortunately this scenario will never happen, thanks to a new Active Duty-Reserve partnership between the 43rd Airlift Wing and the 440th Airlift Wing, both located at Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

Tech. Sgt. Jon Surette, NCOIC of education and training for the 43rd Medical Squadron, is volunteering his time to teach the EMT refresher course to 440th Medical Squadron enlisted Airmen. The course is required every two years along with 48 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) for every certified EMT to maintain their certification and to continue to provide emergency medical care to personnel on Pope AFB.
